Award-winning Cornish language programme for schools in Penwith

Building on the successes of the last two years, Go Cornish is inviting all teachers in the Penzance area to take part in an award-winning Cornish language programme with six professional development sessions.

Each participating school will receive a whole range of high-quality ‘Tales from Porth’ teaching materials, along with suggested class activities and teaching tools to enable children to learn some Cornish language in fun and engaging ways.

Practitioners Will Coleman and Pol Hodge will deliver an introductory class session for each school. Teaching and non-teaching staff are invited to attend twilight CPD sessions, which will run every Monday after school through January and February 2019. Children and their families will then be invited to take part in the Treasure Trail and Tea Treat around the town of Penzance on Saturday 2nd March 2019, learning some Cornish language along the way. Artists will aid schools in creating shop window displays, which will be incorporated into the trail.

Offer to schools

Professional Development:

• 6 twilight CPD sessions: Mon 14th Jan – 25th Feb 16:00 – 17:00 at the Admiral Benbow, 46 Chapel St, Penzance, TR18 4AF

Free Resources:

• 1 complete teaching set of 6 ‘Tales from Porth’ series 1 (aimed at Y3/4)
• 1 interactive CD-ROM
• 1 ‘More Tales from Porth’ book (aimed at Y5/6)
• 1 free book for every child in the class to take home (title of their choice)
• Free translation service for signs around school, letterheads etc.

Delivery sessions:

• 1 introductory session delivered in your class
• 1 artist workshop plus materials to prepare for the shop window display

Schools are invited to:

• Attend Monday twilight sessions (total of 6 hours CPD), for teaching and non-teaching staff
• Deliver 30min+ story-based sessions a week in class
• Encourage pupils and their families to participate in the Treasure Trail and Tea Treat on Sat 2nd March 2019
